Alleged fraud fugitive Adriaan Van Vuuren was found dead in his hotel room on Thursday afternoon after apparently committing suicide.

Van Vuuren‚ 44‚ "checked in at Centurion Lake Hotel in Pretoria last night for a night stay only and was supposed to have checked out at 10:00 this morning‚" the Hawks' Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said in a statement issued on Thursday evening.

"His body was discovered at noon by the hotel staff members who wanted to clean the room. It is suspected that he... suffocated himself with a gas inside the hotel room."

The former Trudon IT manager was accused of defrauding the Telkom subsidiary of R500 million with his alleged accomplice Sonja Joubert who is believed to have fled to New Zealand.

It is alleged that between 2007 and 2016‚ Van Vuuren fraudulently created invoices to pay a supplier for services required by Trudon on behalf of Telkom.
