Police and an unknown number of gunmen are locked in a gunfight in Ogies, Mpumalanga, with the gunmen said to be trapped in a bank and a policeman shot and wounded.

Police have confirmed the dramatic four-hour gunfight currently under way and that one police officer has been injured but spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said he did not have full details readily available.

“I can confirm the incident, the scene is still on and one police officer has been shot and injured. I have one official who has gone to the scene and we are expecting a report with full details,” he said.

Hlathi said preliminary information was that police spotted the suspects that had broken into an Absa bank and the gunmen immediately opened fire on police.

A source living in the area said the gunfight has been on since 4am, with police apparently having run out of ammunition.

“The thugs are trapped inside the bank. There has been a gunfight since 4am and police have stopped firing. It appears that they have run our bullets,” the source said.

This is a developing story TimesLIVE will provide rolling updates as the scene unfolds.
