Gauteng meter taxi drivers have distanced themselves from a circulating message that threatens violence against Uber drivers.

“We know nothing about the message being circulated. If we wanted to be cruel‚ we would not have announced it. We are not planning to be vandals towards Uber at this point.

As the Meter Taxi Association‚ we are of the view that it is very stupid for someone to send such a threatening message to both commuters and our business‚ ” said Abner Mashikinya‚ a Meter Taxi Association spokesperson.

According to Mashikinya‚ the meter taxi drivers will only retaliate against Uber drivers if they threaten their pick-up spots.

“If they come closer to our territory and threaten to occupy our rank‚ we will go after them. You must remember that Uber works in parallel style towards our industry‚ they are not competition but alien to our regulations and methods‚” Mashikinya said.
