A crowd of Cape Flats residents greeted President Jacob Zuma on Thursday at the home of three-year-old Courtney Pieters.

Zuma visited the family to meet Courtney’s family and unveil a plaque on the wall of their Elsies River house in memory of the murdered child.

 

The community members sang gospel and struggle songs as they waited for Zuma‚ whose arrival was delayed by his attendance at an ANC caucus meeting in parliament.

A 40-year-old man who lived at the three-year-old's house appeared in Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday charged with murder‚ rape and kidnapping.

Neighbours expressed shock about the murder‚ saying mothers needed to be more vigilant and monitor their children. Many children of Courtney’s age were among the crowd at the Pieters family’s home.
