Manenberg's baby Tyler le Grange laid to rest
Family friends and community members yesterday mourned baby Tyler le Grange, who died last week at a Cape Town clinic.
Police and Western Cape health officials are investigating the deaths of 14-week-old Tyler and five-month-old Zakia Williams who were pronounced dead at the Manenberg Clinic last Wednesday.
It was reported that they died after being vaccinated, but Zakia's autopsy found her death was not related to vaccines, said health spokesman Faiza Steyn.
Tyler was vaccinated at the clinic the day he died and was brought back to the clinic not breathing. An autopsy was conducted but the results were not released "because of pending microscopic tests and investigations", Steyn said. The two deaths were unrelated.
The police opened inquest dockets and were investigating, said Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut.
About 100 mourners gathered at Tyler's funeral yesterday at Manenberg's New Apostolic Church. His mother, Nikita, 20, and father, Ashley, accompanied his little casket from the church.
Community leaders accuse Manenberg Clinic staff of disrespect and poor care. Proudly Manenberg vice-chairman Richard Mathee said staff had to change.
Christine Jansen, secretary of the Manenberg Health Committee, which runs the clinic, said: "The attitude of some community members towards clinic staff cannot be excused. Staff are sworn at. African nurses are constantly being called the k-word. Nurses are reluctant to come and work at this clinic."
