Johannesburg man arrested for child pornography
The bust of an international ring involved in online abuse of minors operating from Europe has led to another arrest in South Africa.
The South African Police Service’s Family Violence‚ Child Protection and Sexual Offence (FCS) team on Thursday arrested a Johannesburg man for possession‚ distribution and manufacturing of child pornography.
The 27-year-old suspect was immediately taken to the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court where he was granted bail of R2‚000.
His case will return to court next month.
The man joins a growing list of suspects arrested as part of the police’s Operation Cloud 9‚ an ongoing police operation formed specifically to investigate the online sexual exploitation of children.
The suspect’s porn activities came to light as a result of an arrest in 2014 of a suspect in Antwerp‚ Belgium‚ who was found to have been part of a wider ring of 219 individuals worldwide‚ sharing child abuse images through the use of a software.
"After receiving information from their Belgian colleagues‚ the FCS team investigation finally led them to an address in Meredale in Johannesburg‚ where the suspect was arrested this morning‚" the SAPS said in a statement.
During the arrest the police also confiscated two laptops‚ three cellular phones and two external hard drives for further investigations.
His arrest comes just a week after Derek Hunter‚ a 39-year-old man from Midrand‚ was convicted by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court for possession and distribution of child pornography.
