Zuma meets Afrikaner community over Malema comments

Staff Reporter | 12 March, 2010 15:380 Comments

President Jacob Zuma had a private dinner with members of the Afrikaner community at Mahlamba Ndlopfu, his official residence in Pretoria, to discuss, among other issues, comments reportedly made by ANC Youth League President Julius Malema.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the meeting, organised at the request of several members of the community, was intended to further improve dialogue with this important constituency (Afrikaner community).

"Discussions centered on cultural, social and political issues. It provided an opportunity for a frank and open exchange of views about challenges facing the country. President Zuma emphasised the need for all South Africans to be part of the process of building a united and prosperous nation," the Presidency said.

It said concerns were raised by some participants about comments reportedly made by ANC Youth League President Julius Malema.

"President Zuma assured them of the unwavering commitment of the ANC and government to non-racialism and the promotion of the cultural rights and practices of all South Africans. He said they remained committed to combating all forms of racism, sexism and intolerance," said the statement.

The Presidency said Zuma will continue to meet with different sections of South African society, both formally and informally, to encourage such dialogue and promote greater understanding.
