Estelle to touch down in Cape Town

ANDILE NDLOVU | 31 May, 2010 23:040 Comments

British R&B singer Estelle will headline Cool Britannia, a 32-day party in Cape Town, running for the duration of the World Cup, from June 11 to July 12.

The Grammy-winning singer, famous for her American Boy collaboration with hip-hop star Kanye West, will arrive in South Africa on the eve of the soccer spectacular.

She will be joined by fellow countrymen rapper Dizzee Rascal and Fatboy Slim.

More artists will be added to the line-up, but local acts Flash Republic, HHP, DJ Fresh, Euphonik, Roger Goode, Black Coffee, Milkshake, Ricardo da Costa, 340ml, Dean Fuel, La Vuvuzela and dance duo Liquideep are already confirmed to entertain crowds of about 8000 a day at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Organisers say the ticket sales suggest a huge contingent of Brits and Americans are to attend the marathon party.

It is expected that Estelle will hit the stage late at night on June 11 after Bafana Bafana's match against Mexico and Uruguay's duel with France.

Party organiser Simon Elton said: "Whenever visitors come to South Africa they all want to see Cape Town, because of the scenery and vibe. It's renowned worldwide, so we knew instantly that Cape Town was the ideal spot."

Flash Republic lead singer Tamara Dey told The Times: "It will be the second time that we're opening for Fatboy Slim, after we opened for him during Coke Fest, and that was awesome, so it will be really rad.

"We'll also showcase some new songs from our September release," she said.
