Snowy havoc on Eastern Cape roads

Sapa | 15 June, 2010 08:340 Comments

Heavy snow is wreakinghavoc on Eastern Cape roads, with several accidents and road closures reported.

"People in Cradock say it has not snowed like this in 21 years," said provincial traffic spokesman Tshepo Machaea.

One person was critically injured when a truck overturned on the N2 between Idutwya and Mthatha, he said.

In other accidents, people were injured on the R58 between Barkly East and Lady Grey when a minibus taxi overturned, while a vehicle rammed into the back of a truck in Graaff-Reinet.

Machaea said he would have more details on these accidents later in the day.

Roads closed because of heavy snowfall are:

  • the Nico Malan Pass between Seymour and Whittlesea;
  • the R61 between Graaff-Reinet and Cradock at the Wapadsberg Pass;
  • the N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg at the Lootsberg Pass;
  • the N6 between Jamestown and Queenstown at the Penhoek pass; and
  • the R58 between Elliot and Barkly Pass.

Machaea said the R63 between Somerset East and Pearston, at Bruintjieshoogte, had been partly opened but that it was still slippery.
