Malema's actions a danger to democracy
A political analyst has warned of the chilling effect the actions of Julius Malema could have on democracy in South Africa. He was reacting to exclusive Times Live video which shows the ANC Youth League president ordering the police to remove ANC security and ANCYL members from their Limpopo provincial conference.
Eusebius Mckaiser, a political analyst at the Centre for the Study of Democracy, says that the use of police should be a last resort. He says that “the political impact of using security to deal with political dissent is very negative and very undesirable.”
He describes this behaviour as being in the category of a “president taking a journalist to court. Even if the president loses that case, the mere fear that you might have to use a lot of money as an organisation or a journalist will stop you from writing a critical article."
ANC Youth League members in Limpopo have rejected Malema's use of policemen to crush his opposition.
They are demanding that the conference by re-held after the World Cup to “elect a legitimate leadership”. They say if this doesn’t happen they will organize a new elective conference themselves.
Malema instructed police to remove delegates who were booing him including ANCYL leaders and ANC security members in April.
The ANC Youth League Limpopo regions and sub-regions: Vhembe, Mopani, Peter Mokaba, Sekhukhune and Waterberg say they are shocked and dismayed that their leaders have been charged with walking out of conference.
They say in a statement it is clear that police “acting on instructions” from Malema chased their leaders out.
