Cosatu accuses non-striking cops of disruption
Cosatu has accused non- striking police officers of preventing its workers from picketing in industrial action.
"We've seen police officers, but very few, misbehaving by disrupting peaceful picketing," said Dumisani Dakile, provincial secretary of the Congress of SA Trade Unions in Gauteng.
"We know there was disruptions this morning at Baragwanath hospital and that rubber bullets were fired at our members."
He said this was a legal protest, but said he was concerned that non-striking police were misbehaving with their own colleagues.
He denied that any protesters had intimidated people or prevented them from entering hospitals.
"We are not blockading anyone from entering any hospital. Even if they enter there are no people inside the hospital."
He described the protest as peaceful.
Dakile was responding to reports on Wednesday night that doctors, nurses and even ambulances in Gauteng were blockaded from entering certain hospitals.
"Our assessment is that the strike has been successful so far and that it was peaceful."
He said 24 hour pickets would be carried out and that if government "did not listen" then there will be sit-in protests.
He said none of their members had been arrested so far.
