Get set for new number plates
Gauteng motorists have to start changing number plates soon.
Gauteng transport MEC Bheki Nkosi says his department wants at least 200000 vehicles to have the new aluminium number plates by the end of next month and all Gauteng cars to have them by 2013.
The new hi-tech plates have two letters, two numbers and then two more letters followed by GP. They are permanently affixed and have radio frequency identification tags.
The plates will be traceable back to manufacturers to help counter fake plates. They will reportedly cost about R360, and have to be renewed every five years.
