ANCYL members to get schooling

SIPHO MASONDO | 06 September, 2010 01:330 Comments

The ANCYL in Gauteng is set to become tough on discipline by forcing its new members to go through a mandatory political schooling before being accepted into the party.

This was announced Sunday by the party's newly elected provincial executive committee following a lekgotla held on Saturday.

"Political education remains key in our endeavour to build unity and cohesion within the movement," said chairman Lebogang Maile.

"It is further critical that we ensure that we develop committed and disciplined young people through our political preparatory school."

He said they would develop a political curriculum and mandatory induction for all members of the league.

The idea of a political school was first mooted by ANCYL president Julius Malema last year. Maile said the Gauteng branch of the party was now implementing the plan.

During the lekgotla, which met to chart the course of the PEC for the next two years, the league also agreed to support its parent organisation in its call for the nationalisation of the country's mining resources.

The league also called for the government to speed up land redistribution and the meaningful empowerment of young people.

"We will further be calling on the ANC to review the willing buyer/willing seller principle in relation to the nationalisation debate, but broadly to include the issue of land redistribution," said Maile.

Maile added that their structure would embark on a campaign calling on the ANC to review the BBBEE Sectoral Charters to specifically include a quota on youth empowerment.

"It is time we consider imposing penalties on those companies that fail to comply with these charters."
