Selebi granted leave to appeal

Sally Evans | 06 September, 2010 11:360 Comments

Jackie Selebi has been given a second chance after the High Court in Johannesburg granted him leave to appeal his conviction of corruption and 15-year sentence.

Judge Meyer Joffe told the court that he was only "satisfied with one ground" argued by the defence, for leave to appeal.

"I am satisfied that save for one ground, the applicant has no reasonable success for appeal, only on whether the State proved, that payments allegedly made to Selebi, were in fact made to him and only on that would I grant leave to appeal.

"Leave to appeal to Supreme Court of Appeal is granted to Selebi on the issue on whether the State proved beyond reasonable doubt that accused received the payments that have been found to be made to him," Joffe said.

Selebi's bail has been extended.
