South African diplomat Abdul Minty's unsuccessful bid to become head of the International Atomic Energy Agency cost R3.3-million, says International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

The campaign costs included R1.3-million for transport, an allowance of just under R1-million, R857 451 for accommodation and R187 723 for entertainment, the minister said in reply to a parliamentary question from the Democratic Alliance on Monday.

Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano was chosen over Minty to head the United Nations nuclear watchdog last year, succeeding Nobel peace laureate Mohammed el Baradei, who served three terms as head of the agency.
