Veld fires destroy land in Free State
Working on Fire says two veld fires that have already destroyed more than 60,000 hectares of land in the eastern Free State are still burning.
The fires broke out on Friday in the Fouriesburg and Rosendal areas, spokesman Saayman Rossouw told Sapa.
Two helicopters were deployed to the area.
“WoF’s Free State fire-fighting teams worked around the clock and additional teams from Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal were called in to assist,” he said.
Rossouw says low humidity and winds of 10-15 kilometres per hour mean that the Fire Danger Index will remain in the orange to red range for the rest of the week.
There was no reported loss of life — human or animal.
