Alleged poachers get bail

Sapa | 01 October, 2010 16:220 Comments

Two alleged rhino horn poachers arrested in the Kruger National Park last Saturday were granted bail in the White River Magistrate's Court on Friday, Mpumalanga police say.

Michael Sithole, 47, who was shot during the arrest following a shoot-out with police, appeared alongside Leonard Mashego, 49, and were each granted bail of R7500, said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

Their alleged accomplice, Sifiso Matsabe, 28, appeared in the same court earlier in the week. He was also granted bail of R7500.

The three, who were allegedly armed with rifles at the time of their arrest, were cornered by game rangers patrolling the national park.

Two rhino horns were allegedly recovered from the men and the carcass was found.

Hlathi said there was a possibility that the men were involved in a poaching syndicate and responsible for other poaching incidents in the area.

They are expected to return to court on December 3.

The men's court appearance comes after 11 other people, including two veterinarians, a pilot and a game farmer -- all allegedly part of a rhino poaching syndicate - appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court last week.

They were alleged to be part of a syndicate which operated around Polokwane, Modimolle and Musina.

The group was granted bail, ranging from R20,000 to R1 million each. Their case was postponed to April 11.

More than 200 rhinos were killed for their horns since the beginning of the year - a number up from a total of 122 poached last year.
