The case against six men charged with the murder of the Potgieter family on their Free State farm has been postponed.

The Lindley Magistrate's Court postponed the case to December 13 for further investigations.

The men face three murder charges each, robbery with aggravating circumstances and being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. They would remain in custody.

Attie Potgieter, 40, his wife Wilna, 36, and their three-year-old daughter Willemien were found murdered on their farm on Thursday last week. It seemed Potgieter had been stabbed, while his wife and daughter were shot.

Earlier Lindley farmers and Freedom Front Plus members, including party leader Pieter Mulder, protested outside the court. They displayed placards asking for the return of the death penalty.

"We are here to express our anger and frustration," said Mulder.

"For what other reason would you kill a two-and-half-year old baby... it is difficult to explain this other than an act of racism."

Mulder said a further frustration was that the governing ANC had not said one word about the crime. He said the country's leaders should publicly condemn such killings, no matter who the victims were.

The ANC-led government should wake up and declare farm attacks as a priority crime, just as cash-in-transit heists and murders recently, Mulder said.

However, a handful of ANC Women's League members were also at the court to protest, and show support for the victim's families. Maki Mokoena, from the Thabo Mofutsanyana branch, said they condemned the killings.
