The end of a week-long strike by freight workers was welcomed by the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) on Monday after trade unions agreed to a revised wage deal.

"SACCI congratulates the negotiators and looks forward to two years of stability in the industry," SACCI president Chose Choeu said in a statement.

"SACCI believes that wisdom has prevailed and that as a result the potential damage to the South African economy has been minimised," he said.

Four unions -- the SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu), the Professional Transport Workers' Union (PTWU), Transport Allied Workers' Union of SA (Tawusa) and the Motor Transport Workers' Union (MTWU) -- had agreed in principle to a revised industry wage deal.

The deal included a nine percent increase across the board for 2011 and 8.5 percent for 2012.

The unions were expected to make a final decision following consultation with members during the course of Monday.

"SACCI trusts that the packages negotiated will not translate into undue increases for consumers which could well spiral into increased labour demands in other industries," Choeu said.

About 65,000 truckers embarked on a go-slow on February 13 and downed tools last Monday.

The strike turned violent during the week with at least 20 trucks damaged, 16 people injured and scores of arrests after non-striking truckers were beaten and their trucks looted and burned.

Two men were also seriously injured when their truck was petrol-bombed in Durban on Thursday.
