Singer Danny K drove a Nissan Sabre his parents won in a raffle before scoring free use of a Kia Sorento, writes Edwin Naidu

Multi-talented singer Danny K is a hot chef and is committed to SHOUT, the organisation he founded with fellow musician Kabelo Mabalane, that campaigns for a safer South Africa .

Born Daniel Koppel, Danny K, as he is popularly known, has had several chart-topping hits.

But he is a down-to-earth South African who just wants to be remembered as someone who has made a difference.

SHOUT has been around for over three years and Danny believes it has helped in the struggle to create a better country.

"We have presented the SHOUT message to thousands of school-goers and, at every opportunity, we pound away at how a better "ME", makes for a better WE. It's easy to say it's the other guy's problem but, until we understand that we are all in the same boat with a hole in the hull, we're all going to go down."

A four-time Sama award winner, Danny K is married to Lisa, daughter of the famous celebrity divorce and criminal lawyer Billy Gundelfinger.

He happily admits that he shares cooking duties with Lisa at home. So he's no Jamie Oliver but Danny K finished a close second to Afrikaans singer Kurt Darren in last year's MNTV Cook-Off television show on DStv's Home Channel with a yummy Portuguese baked fish.

When not shouting for a better South Africa, Danny and Lisa stick to a healthy diet.

What was your first car?

A Nissan Sabre - I loved having a car, but hated the shape. It was totally "uncool".

How did you get it?

My parents won it in a raffle - true story

What did it cost?

Best part for them - it was FREE

How long did you have it?

About a year-and-a-half later, it was stolen. I was insured and really happy.

What attracted you to it in the first place?

I had no choice in the matter. I was told to love it.

What's the most surprising thing about your current car?

The amazing roof. It's all glass, and makes me feel as if I'm in a convertible.

What made you choose the car you have?

I am sponsored by Kia. I drive the new 2013 Sorento 4x4 and I am crazy about it. It's an amazing car.

Tell us about your first big accident?

I was driving with my dog on the passenger seat. He jumped on me and I took my eyes off the road, ramped a pavement and landed on these huge pavement boulders (outside a house). Luckily, no one was hurt.

You're driving down the Cote d'Azur in a Ferrari Daytona - who would be your dream passenger?

My wife Lisa - easy question.

If you won the Lotto, what vehicle(s) would you buy?

I'd buy a Rolls-Royce Ghost - white on white. Big pimping.

Have you found anything on the market that you simply could not resist?

The Rolls-Royce Ghost.

In your own words, what drives you?

I am not the biggest petrol head, but I love something that looks cool and slick - and makes me comfortable driving around Jozi. My car is big, black and intimidating. Perfect for taking on taxis, road-rage fuelled drivers and impatient commuters.
