BMW recently revealed a concept version of their new 4-series coupé in supercar-baiting M4 guise at Pebble Beach, California.

The concept was shown at the Concours d'Elegance motor show, with a production version due at the Detroit motor show in January. It promises even sharper looks.

The concept, which is believed to be very close to the final design, is finished in "aurum dust" paint and boasts a number of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic parts, including the roof, front splitter and rear diffuser, all designed to reduce the car's weight (and, in the case of the roof, lower its centre of gravity).

The bonnet features BMW M division's signature bulge, the "power dome", as well as three large air intakes.

At the rear you get an impression of the M4's wider track, thanks to flared wheel arches.

Under the bonnet, the V8 petrol engine of the M3 will be replaced with a straight-six, twin-turbocharged unit producing about 450bhp.

Drive is likely to be sent to the rear wheels through BMW's seven-speed paddle-shift gearbox.

The BMW M4 coupé goes on sale next year.
