The best drivers in South Africa are in the Western Cape - according to Discover Insure's road safety smartphone app.

The app collected data from about 16.8 million kilometres of driving in its first month of operation, with over 36,000 people having downloaded it.

The app gives users detailed feedback after each trip - telling them about their bad habits such as harsh braking and cornering, speeding and fiddling with their smartphones while driving.

Although about 70% of the users who have downloaded it are male, so far the data it has collected points to women as being better drivers.

This is despite the fact that they tend to brake more harshly and use their cellphones more often while driving.

Men lost because they suck at taking corners and are addicted to speed.

In terms of provincial rankings, they are as follows:

  1. Western Cape
  2. Gauteng
  3. Eastern Cape
  4. North West
  5. Free State
  6. Northern Cape
  7. KwaZulu-Natal
  8. Mpumalanga
  9. Limpopo
