South African aid organisation Gift of The Givers are preparing to send aid to disaster-stricken Haiti.

Spokesman Dr Imtiaz Ismail Sooliman told the Times this morning that relief efforts will cost about R10 million.

About 100 tons of equipment and medical supplies will be delivered to the Carribean nation where an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck about 15 kilometres southwest of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince on January 12.

Thousands of people have died.

"We have a search and rescue team and a medical team ready, and are putting together 100 tons of supplies to send," Sooliman told The Times this morning.

The medical team will include orthopaedic surgeons, trauma surgeons and nurses and advanced life support paramedics. Medical supplies including tents, medicines and bottled water would be flown to the country, said Solomon.

Rubble-removing equipment, drilling apparatus and equipment to prop up damaged buildings was also needed.

Gift of the Givers has appealed for financial assistance from the public to help fund their search and rescue efforts.
