Diary: Inside Haiti (Day 6)
Exclusive: Today seemed a lot quieter than previous days. I went to town very early to shoot images of people who have been sleeping in the road.
Not many people choose to sleep indoors, even if their house is still standing, for fear of another quake. Rocks are put across sections of road and everyone lays their blankets or matresses out.
Haiti is a very badly polluted place (even before the quake) and due to a lack of water and sanitation, there is a lot of raw sewage in the streets.
With so many people outside, I hope that people don't start getting sick with cholera and other diseases.
Later in the day I saw some big plumes of black smoke so I went to see what was happening. I was surprised to see a group of young men sweeping up debris and rubbish into piles and setting fire to them. "We are getting sick of this rubbish. It just lays here, day after day.. There are even body parts here. We have children and it's not good for them, so we will clean this street." said one man when I asked him why he was doing this.
It is this type of "life must go on" attitude that is becoming more and more evident each day. I'm not sure it will be that easy though... This whole country has got Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and no one to counsel them.
I didn't feel any tremors today, but I've moved to a new hotel which looks a lot more sturdy. I was very tired today. Its difficult to keep going at this rate with very little sleep.
