The wife of a well-known Afrikaans gospel singer was raped by a ‘’gang initiate’’ during a house robbery in Irene, east of Pretoria.

The singer was working on his computer at about 2am when four men, armed with a firearm, climbed through a window into the family’s double-storey house in a closed complex.

The intruders tied the singer up and began to ransack the house.

Captain Collette Weilbach said while three of the men looted the house, one of the suspects, “went up to the main bedroom and raped the singer’s wife where she was sleeping”.

Weilbach said another of the suspects, who seemed like the leader of the group, later ‘’apologised to the couple, saying the man who had raped her was new to the group and normally they don’t rape people’’.

The family’s two daughters and son, aged between 2 and 11, slept through the entire ordeal.

After the four men loaded a computer and cellphones into the singer’s white Renault Megane, they ordered him to drive it out of the complex so the security guards would not be suspicious. The man was forced out of the car outside the complex.

Police found the car abandoned in Tembisa yesterday afternoon. The singer’s wife was taken to hospital.

Weilbach said no arrests had been made, but a task team from Sunnyside is investigating.
