A man of the cloth is likely to be the country's next chief justice.

Judge Mogoeng Mogoeng, 50, who was yesterday nominated by president Jacob Zuma to succeed Judge Sandile Ngcobo, is also a pastor of the Winner's Chapel International.

The normally reserved judge joined the Constitutional Court in October 2009 and these are among his judgments:

  • November 2010, Mogoeng delivered judgment concerning the nature and extent of an organ of state's duty to act when presented with evidence that an enterprise to which it had awarded a tender, taking into account its black shareholding, had provided fraudulent information about its black shareholding. He ruled organs of state do not remain passive when credible allegations of fronting or tender irregularities come to light.
  • June 7 2011, Mogoeng ruled in a matter involving a challenge to the validity of search and seizure warrants issued in terms of section 21 of the Criminal Procedure Act. He dismissed an application for leave to appeal by the minister of safety and security, who had obtained warrants as a result of a suspicion by the Commercial Crime Unit of the SA Police Service.
