Valentine's Day ghost for Oscar

Staff Reporter | 2014-02-14 05:07:29.0
Olympic and Paralympic running star Oscar Pistorius reacts ahead of court proceedings at the Pretoria Magistrates court, August 19, 2013. Pistorius, accused of murdering his model girlfriend, prayed and wiped away tears in a court hearing on Monday which set a March 3, 2014 start date for his trial.

A shroud of secrecy hides the Blade Runner's movements.

Oscar Pistorius is trying to keep as low a profile as possible even though he has been spotted at a number of Pretoria restaurants with friends and family .

Family and friends refuse to be drawn into talking about him, or detail what he has been going through a year after he fatally shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

"Asking this now is like asking a rally racer in the middle of a turn whether he'd like an ice cream," said his uncle Arnold Pistorius.

"At the moment it is focus. Focus, focus, focus and then some more focus. The sole thing we are focusing on now is the trial. It is our end goal."

He agreed that everyone's lives have been changed.

"It does not matter who you were, or are, and it is the right thing to ask, but we cannot talk now. Our lives and the life of Oscar are very different. Fundamentally so."

Pistorius has apparently returned to training with a vengeance and is apparently back in the same physical condition he was in when he qualified for the Olympics.

The Pistorius family spokesman, Anneliese Burgess, has also been tight-lipped.

A source close to the family said the athlete will spend the anniversary of the shooting with close family.

"Like Reeva's father, he also has a special photo of Reeva, which he keeps close to him. No one really knows how he is going to react, but you can imagine the pressure on him is immense, especially now.

"One thing is for sure - he definitely thinks about her a lot, and that day, though he doesn't discuss his thoughts with a lot of people, just those who are really close to him."
