Thulani Cele, 38, appeared briefly in court yesterday for the murder of Johannesburg businessman Jeff Wiggill.

Wiggill, 54, was the chairman of construction conglomerate First Tech and was shot execution-style next to his black Bentley in Soweto in June last year.

On the night of his death, Wiggill picked up Cele, a First Tech maintenance worker and a friend of some years.

A few days after Wiggill's death, First Tech collapsed amid allegations of fraud.

Some believe Wiggill staged his own death and fled South Africa, while others believe his death was an assisted suicide.

Former First Tech CEO Andy Bartulis and Wiggill's life partner, Alexander Klencovljevic, 30, are expected to testify.

After the hearing, Cele, whose bail was extended, said: "I didn't kill him. I still maintain my innocence."
