A sixth South African has been arrested in an international child pornography investigation codenamed Operation Cloud 9. The 47-year-old logistics broker from Fish Hoek, outside Cape Town, was taken into custody in a raid on his run-down house on Tuesday night. The unmarried man allegedly had thousands of images of child pornography, some showing "violent abuse" of babies as young as a few days old.He has been charged with possession and distribution of pornography.Police have not found any evidence the children in the pictures are South African, but they are investigating. One-hundred people involved in this syndicate have been arrested globally.SAPS spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the arrest, "has a global connection"."All of these suspects' alleged shenanigans were brought to the attention of the South African Police Service after police authorities in Antwerp, Belgium, arrested one of their residents for production, possession and facilitation of child pornographic images that depict minors or where minors are being used for these purposes."South African and Belgian officials have been monitoring the Fish Hoek man's online activities since June.In January, a 37-year-old Plettenberg Bay computer engineer was arrested after Belgian police profiled a paedophile on a social media website. In March, a Port Elizabeth couple were arrested for possession and distribution of child pornography, a 39-year-old Midrand man was arrested for possession and distribution of pornography, and a 53-year-old Grahamstown man was arrested for possession, manufacturing and distribution of pictures of about 600 children from the US.The syndicate links about 400 suspects globally to child pornography, which occurs mostly online.Officials involved in the investigation describe the child pornographic images as the "most violent, gruesome and shocking" they have seen globally.Chief Inspector Tim van Eester, of the Belgian police, said 21 Belgian suspects had been identified via the arrests and investigations conducted in South Africa.Aside from monitoring the suspects online, profiling was an important tool, said Van Eester. The suspects arrested so far came from a very "heterogenic" group. They were aged from 25 up to their 70s and could come from any profession . Many were "preferential paedophiles" rather than "situational paedophiles". Preferential paedophiles developed a preference for children at a young age, some even since birth. "Their lives are based on an idea of having sex with a child. "Joan van Niekerk, president of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, said preferential paedophiles had an "exclusive attraction to children".
