Uganda's gay death penalty bill slammed

Human rights groups have blasted Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which includes a section that would introduce the death penalty for the offence of "aggravated homosexuality."

The bill proposes stricter penalties for homosexual acts, already illegal in the East African nation, and the death penalty for anyone who engages in same-sex relations with children under 18 and disabled people or who is HIV-positive while having gay sex.

"This bill is a blow to the progress of democracy in Uganda," David Kato of Sexual Minorities Uganda said in a statement on Thursday. "Its spirit is profoundly undemocratic and un-African."

Gays are already subject to persecution and arbitrary arrest in Uganda. Rights groups said people suspected of being gay have been assaulted, received death threats and face discrimination.

The bill also proposes a seven-year jail sentence for the "promotion of homosexuality."

The joint statement by the rights groups, which include New York-based Human Rights Watch, said the bill would "criminalise the legitimate work of national and international activists and organisations working for the defence and promotion of human rights in Uganda."

It would also hamper efforts to fight HIV/AIDS, the groups said.

"Discrimination and punitive laws like this aimed at marginalised groups and at those often among the most affected by HIV drives people underground and does nothing to help slow down the AIDS epidemic," said Daniel Molokele, Africa programme officer at the World AIDS Campaign.

Well isn't that what the Bible says we should do?

And you chase the name The Wisdom, why?

The bible also talks about separate development of the tribes, which was one of the cornerstones of apartheid - should we also listen to that one? Or how about an eye for an eye or stoning adulterers to death?

Yip, the Bible says a lot of things that we can use in defence of our actions. I would rather stick to real-life human rights!!

So who is the big homophobe in Uganda?

People have pursued same sex relationships for centuries, the incongruity of this is that one just has to walk in the streets to see how many African men are engaged in open relationships with other men, this kind of rabid denial is quite sad, and not funny at all.

Reminds of the other famous old fruit, Canaan Banana of the well known fruit kingdom of Zimbobwe......

Sies Uganda!!! Why focus on a marganilsed group? There is rampant corruption in your country, little or no development, widespread poverty, hunger and starvation and you pass a law focusing on gays?!! Get your priorities right and focus on real issues!

"death penalty for anyone who engages in same-sex relations with children under 18 and disabled people or who is HIV-positive while having gay sex."

Can't see anything wrong with this, just include anyone who is HIV-positive from engaging in sex, as it is like a slow premeditated murder or attempted murder. Protection is not ever going to be 100% so it is murderously risky, like Russian roulette.

Uganda is the only country in the world who had a in AIDs related deaths so their stance must be working. To merely slate them is disingenuous, when their long term stand point is working and saving their nation.

Homosexuality is nevertheless an indication of complete rebellion against God and his order. Read Romans 3.

Congradulations to Uganda no Western nation should tell us what to do. We Africans should determine our own moral values not based on the the west, east, north or south. No retreat no surrender.
