The United States is "deeply concerned" by reports that South African "military instructors" are training militiamen backed by the ruling junta in Guinea, a US official said.

"The United States has received reports of 40 or 50 South African military instructors training militia members in Guinea, including some under the age of 18," the State Department official told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

Witnesses in Guinea told AFP on Monday that South African as well as Israeli army instructors, hired by the ruling junta, are training recruits in a camp in Forecariah, 100 kilometers south of the capital Conakry.

The State Department official, who also understood that the camp is in Forecariah, said: "We are deeply concerned." He did not mention Israelis.

"We view this activity as a direct affront to the democratic aspirations of the Guinean people contrary to the efforts of the international to reach a peaceful resolution to the current crisis and calculated move by the ruling junta to maintain power through armed force and ethnic division," the official said.

He said the US government has raised its concerns with the South African authorities who "promised to investigate these reports. We applaud that."

In Pretoria on Tuesday, South Africa's foreign ministry said it was investigating the reports that people described as South African mercenaries are training pro-junta recruits in Guinea.

Witnesses said the new soldiers recruited by the junta, which seized power in Guinea on December 23 last year, are being trained in a camp formerly used to house Sierra Leone refugees outside Forecariah.

Around 40 military instructors are training soldiers "recruited on the basis of their ethnicity" as they belong to the same group as junta leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, witnesses said.

Observers accuse the junta, under increasing international pressure after the massacre of over 150 opposition supporters at a rally in September, of recruiting young men from Camara's home region close to Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Well let see after the fall of apartheid we cleanse the army of the old regime and throw these highly trained and experienced soldiers onto the street with ZERO support ........ so what does a highly trained operator do in civvie street do ....... become a cat stroker at the local SPCA!!! ..... of course not he is off to find a flippin war and make serious dollars.

SA Government then introduces the Foreign Military Assistance act to stop them. Now seriously do you think that these guys are dumb enough to get caught, there major dollars will be hidden away (probibly in same bank as our ANC politicians) and they will be off the radar. They have connections all over the world including and especially Isreal. This is a f.....rt in the wind to these type of operators.

Everyone goes on about the guys in IRAQ, yet they are not breaking the law as they are not working for the military, they are all subcontractors doing VIP security (not military) same as the guys looking after precious Malema. Secondly it is the USA themselves in IRAQ so therefore no complaint, this type of hypocrasy kills me.

To The USA

We are just doing what you have done for years and still doing. You see we have adopted your get quick rich scheme of funding the oil countries' guerilla forces and once they decide they can longer be your puppets you remove them forcefully with your army, most recently Saddam Hussein.

Now we do understand you would have preffered being the trainer to our future wealth militants but we got there first so, with all due respect...back off, this is our oil!

With warmest and most sincere regards

South Africa.

N.B. we are still brothers hey, coz u do know that Africa is indirectly owned by SA.

USA and RSA same objective always.

South Africans, dont you want us to have puppets in the oil countries? Its the modern art of self enriching.

Let us allow for the training of these militants, then its the coupe and after that we are in business, if they refuse, we do what Bush did, we invade them and put someone who will be our puppet.

If only Zim had oil, i dont know what are we beniffiting from there, but maybe there is a hidden wealth!

all the developed countries are doing it, we are 89% developed and we need to indirectly own an oil country before we can meet the criteria..so please lets just zip it and allow for the training to continue!

Patriotic is what we should be.

I thought about your comments the other day with great care and admit that at times the news and the insanity that we are forced to accept from some 'leaders' and the continual BLATANT THEFT & MISMANAGEMENT OF PUBLIC FUNDS within the anc does drive me to my limits!

Again, as in your answering this question above brings me to my knees, in the level of intellect that we are dealing with across the scope of our inclusive society and commenters.

I have NO IDEA how to dumb myself down to these levels though and will not sit back and be rapped over the knuckles so to speak or insulted by overly sensitive thieves and frauds and imposters and tribalists - so - loggerheads is where it is at.

Are you going to take on these resultants of OBE and try to educate them in similar manner to the way in which the SABCTV was used to try and educate the nation to wash their hands, using these commentry blocks?
Am genuinely interested to know.
