A blind Pietermaritzburg woman has turned to the Equality Court in a bid to force the Msundusi Municipality to make her home suitable to her needs.

In an affidavit filed in the city's Equality Court on Monday, Linda van Wyk detailed the difficulties of living in her RDP house in Eastwood, which was not adapted to the needs of a blind person.

Without steps with railings, a ramp, levelled yard and driveway access for her transport to the Blind and Deaf Society of SA, Van Wyk has been "struggling to live".

Her house is set on a hill and, without the ramp and railings, she cannot find her front door.

In court papers Van Wyk said she knew the house was not suitable when she moved in, but was desperate for a home. In a letter to the municipality, her lawyer, Mark Bastew, pointed out that the municipal official and councillor were aware of Van Wyk's disability when the house was allocated and ought to have foreseen the difficulties she is experiencing.

The municipality has two weeks to file its responding documents.

Van Wyk hopes that the matter will be resolved and that the improvements will be made before the rainy season begins.
