Speaking at the ANC Youth League's (ANCYL) 65th anniversary gala dinner at the Johannesburg Country Club, the president said “if we don't have Bafana Bafana we have nothing, so we have to encourage them”.

“Bafana will make us proud,” he said. “Bafana will demonstrate that we are a soccer nation.”

Zuma said that it was South African's fault that the national soccer team have become so weak.

“We are responsible to what happened to Bafana Bafana. We love winning and hate losing and we sack the coaches when we lose. We cannot change a coach so much and think we are going to win."

Zuma said he personally would prefer that the national coach come from South Africa.

“We have coaches in South Africa, we could choose any one of them,” he said.

Zuma honoured the ANCYL guests, Caster Semenya – winner of the 800m World Championship in Berlin recently and medalists, Khotso Mokoena (silver medal in the Long Jump) and Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, 800m gold medalist.

He also honoured athletes in other sporting codes like the Springboks, the national cricket team, the paralympic games team and the deaf Olympics team.

“Their successes inspire not only the youth, but the nation and for that we salute them,” he said.

it would be better to sort out soccer's organisation: find people who wish to actually help, rather than the grandstanding politician types who just want money from their dreadful administration of the game.

of course we support our team. but what about those safa fatcats and anyone who is there for the status and the money ? throw out !! we need people who care.

This is a carefully orchestrated campaign by the ANC to divert attention from the crooks, Chuene, Khompela, Stofile and others.

Nobody in the world cares a damn about Semenya...she is just a pawn playing along because he/she makes money she would otherwise not make.

It must P!ss Zuma and the rest of the Black Elite off terribly that the Springboks are the World Champions.
The Proteas are number 1 in the Test Cricket ratings, yet Banana Bafana are languishing in 87th place in the World Rankings...

I DOUBT Banana Bafana will even score a SINGLE goal in 2010....

Unfortunaely, Safa have forgotten that the sport STARTS at GRASS ROOTS LEVEL!
That is the reason Rugby and Cricket are rated number one.... because their GRASS ROOTS WORK is IMPLIMENTED CORRECTLY!!!

Must seriously P!ss Zuma off!

Even if Sir Alex Furgussen takes over Banana Bafana, they will fail!

I mean to be cynical...Prez, have you watched any of Bafana games the last couple of years? If you had, that portion of your speech should have been replaced with your favourite song, mshini wam. Sure they had some good performance, here and there...but largely they have fail to demostrate that they even qualify to be referred to as a National Team. First round exit next year is gauranteed, at least we wont be flying home, we'll simple drive...

the only reason why soccer is not delevoped it's because there were not sponsored like your rugby and criket.soccer was isolated cos it's played mostly by blacks and the capitalist/imperialist in our soil doesn't want to see any progress from us.

Not every african support your rugby and criket these are racist playing for our country with all their hatred towards us.

We must not expect the same standards from transformed sports than we get from the un-transformed ones...we know tranformation will cost us. Black prise means more than success.

have you lost your mind altogether?
The only thing the anc knows about and does at grasroots level causes the rate of child grants to escalate alarmingly.

Black Pride means more than success...what more does it mean in the context of bafana failing dismally?
