Six-year-old Kabelo Malema, and his friend Thatho Mokgatlhoane, eight, had gone to the dam yesterday morning said emergency services spokesman Percy Morokane.
The youngest jumped into the water and when he began sinking, the eight-year-old tried to save him and both went under.
"The third child saw bubbles on the water surface and ran about 2km to Meadowlands to inform their parents," Morokane said.
Hundreds of community members had gathered on the banks of the dam to help with the search this morning.
