On track for 500,000 jobs: Doidge

Public Works Minister Geoff Doidge says the government is on track to deliver on President Jacob Zuma's promise to create 500000 job opportunities by the end of the year.

Doidge told journalists yesterday that 223,000 work opportunities had been created since April through the second phase of the government's extended public works programme. At the end of the first quarter, the figure was less than 84,000.

"The overall figures mean that we are on track in achieving set targets, and also indicate a spirited increase in work opportunities created in [programme]-compliant projects during the second quarter as compared to the 83,900 work opportunities created in the first quarter," Doidge said.

But ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said the ruling party was concerned that the job opportunities would not make much of a difference, given the effect of the economic recession on the labour market.

"We are beginning to say that [irrespective of] whether the government does create 500,000 job opportunities, if job losses in other sectors are much bigger than the 500000 job opportunities, it doesn't translate to 500,000 jobs gained in the labour market," Mantashe said.

He said that, though the creation of the promised work opportunities was important, ANC leaders felt that the more pressing issue facing the labour market was how quickly it could recover from the economic downturn.

Conveniently not mentioning that 750 000 existing jobs have been LOST this year already and that, even if 500 000 new ones might have been created, you're still quarter-a-million jobs in deficit overall.

Diddling the figures to remove all "the discouraged jobless" in their hundreds of thousands from the official unemployment statistics, or by counting someone who has done only two hours of casual labour in the last month as "employed" is how the ANC regime cooks the books around the true state of unemployment.

Hey everyone - I've just created 100,000 jobs.... but I will not be appointing anyone in the foreseeable future!

The govt could go a long way to filling vancancies in education departments etc.

And what is going to happen as the soccer stadium near completion... more job losses coming soon to a city near you!

Another empty election promise!

The public works program is still Thabo Mbeki's model. Jacob Zuma added the concept of "Job Opportunitites". A job opportunity is a non-sustained employment opportunity for any public works related project. The idea is to use people instead of machines to do things, where possible. These are contracts that run certain tims of the year (like cutting the grass on th side of provincial roads) or are once-off. This should not be confuded with job creation which adds a permanently or contracted job opportunity to the market for an extended period (one person employed for 12 months or more). If the same person works one month stints on twelve different projects then that would count as 12 job opportunities. Politicians and marketers have a lot in common.

we've already lost 500 000 jobs since Jay Z made his ambitious statement which bordered on blatant untruths during the ANC Manifesto in East London this January.

Now mathematically if there's to be 500 000 job opportunities this translates to NO NEW JOBS created by the end of this year.

Therefore employement will have remained the same or declined since the African National Crooks took power.
