Athletics SA has challenged the suspension of its disgraced board and president, Leonard Chuene - but it, along with its athletes, is out in the cold.

South Africa's Olympic governing body, Sascoc, suspended ASA last week for its role in the gender-testing debacle involving 800m world champion runner Caster Semenya.

After ASA refused to acknowledge its suspension, Sascoc expelled it.

Sascoc-appointed administrator Ray Mali was due to occupy his office in Houghton, Johannesburg, yesterday.

He has been told to take over the running of ASA and appoint an interim board.

But Sascoc and Mali have been threatened with an interdict by ASA, which claims that Sascoc had no right to take the action it has.

ASA officers refuse to appear before a disciplinary hearing.

Tubby Reddy, Sascoc's chief executive officer, said that a decision was taken to expel ASA from Sascoc - meaning it is now an independent body with no powers.

"We have informed the IAAF and Athletics Africa that ASA is no longer actively our member until such time as they listen to our demands," said Reddy.

Reddy said the suspension of the ASA membership meant that "everyone in ASA" - the board, the ASA regional offices and even athletes - will not be able to participate in any international events.

"It is now up to ASA to decide what is good for them. Until they listen to our demands and all suspended officials appear before the disciplinary inquiry and allow us to bring someone to handle the ASA, then their membership remains suspended," he said.

"We got the letter from the attorneys acting on behalf of Chuene, the ASA board and ASA saying we don't have the right to suspend the board. They asked us to withdraw the suspension ... they also said that if we send Mali or anyone interfering with the running of the ASA they will interdict us."

Gideon Sam, Sascoc's president, said Sascoc was "within our rights to suspend the ASA board".

You have to love SA politics.... and sport politics.

SASOC are as obnoxious as ASA... but I guess they have at least done something to force the hand of ASA.

One has to feel for the athletes here - again we have a bunch of self serving 'politicians' trying to hang on to their privileges without giving a damn about the people putting in the effort on the ground (literally).

To Justdidit:
In SA politics is played like sport - blind loyalty to one's side regardless of merit, blaming the ref''s bias or bad eyesight for decisions against one's team regardless of the facts and, what was reserved for sportspeople, overrun with professionals and dependent on sponsorship from Big Business.

Our sport is played like politics -blind loyalty to one's side, bribery and fixing and, when all else fails, play the race card.

The ANC has really screwed up this country. Everyone has too many rights. You cannot even fire or suspend your employee.

Unlike Godsell this disgracefull little man like Jacob Maroga and Drunk Judge Motata does not understand the concept of honour, values and integrity.

Tis is typical African style govenance and certainly not "good governance" Not unexpected however See: http://letterdash.com/g.annandale/eskom-godsell-and-african-honour

Common sense tells me that if you are aware of any criminal conduct YOU HAVE TO REPORT THIS TO A LAW ENFORCING ENGENCY.

Please learned jurists in these comments refer the Higher Authorities to what law they have to abide.

If nothing is done in this matter and I have sufficient information, I promise this site that by the end of this month I will put in a complaint at my nearest police station.

The protection from criminals by criminals has to come to come to an end.

V3 - I was involved in an amateur sport and was amazed at the political infighting that went on there... so I would hate to see what goes on in sports where there is big money and sponsorships.

So much for administrators loving the sport!
