A resolution adopted by consensus by the 192-member world body calls for commemorations every year starting in 2010 on July 18 - Mandela’s birthday - to recognise the Nobel Peace Prize laureate’s contribution to resolving conflicts and promoting race relations, human rights and reconciliation.

By adopting the resolution, General Assembly President Ali Treki said the international community was expressing its appreciation for “a great man” who suffered for the sake of people everywhere.

The resolution recognises Mandela’s “leading role in and support for Africa’s struggle for liberation and Africa’s unity, and his outstanding contribution to the creation of a non-racial, non-sexist democratic South Africa.”

It also acknowledges his “contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and in the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world.”

US diplomat Laura Ross said the United States was founded on the belief that all people were created equal and saw in Mandela “a hero and kindred spirit.”

Tanzania’s UN Ambassador Augustine Mahiga called Mandela “a visionary leader” and an “icon of social freedom” whose life has been the ultimate definition of peace, both in South Africa and throughout the world.

Perhaps Mandela’s most outstanding contribution to world peace, he said, was his call for reconciliation with South Africa’s white oppressors, an example that should be emulated by all.

I have lost all my respect for Mandela, how could a man who fought so hard for this country betray his counter parts like OR Tambo, Sobukwe, Sisulu and all struggle heroes by not condemming the current ANC leadership and by keeping silence when ministers spends millions on BMW`s, millions on a hotel bill whilst South Africans are continuing to live in dire poverty conditions.

You are a real disgrace to Africa, from a hero to a zero.

My man, if you knew how much i admired and adored Madiba, you would have said that i was crazy, i remember meeting him and shaking his hand in Kimberley back in 1993, i admired him more than God.

But as time went on, i realised that he is just one overrated person with no backbone to condem the ANC, Desmond Tutu is more worth it than him!

Excellent idea, I think we can all be proud. Loggenberg, nobody is perfect. What Madiba has done far exceeds that which he did not, or should have done. He deserves a break now anyway.

He spent 27 years without making even one mistake which anyone could notice. Thank the NP regime for that.

I agree with you Loggies, THE MAN IS OVERRATED! He is a creation, firstly, of the ANC's propaganda department in exile, secondly, of the primarily white media in South Africa and internationally (read through the black read dailies and see how many times his mentioned, if ever). Tackler, is also correct in a sick way. He was in jail for so long that his mess ups were hidden from view and was so old when he was released that he could cause too much damage. Interestingly, he was considered a populist by his contemporaries, and is lucky to have been shielded by the late Cde Walter Sisulu.

One question: where did he get all the money from (he had R3 Million is assets when he divorced Winnie) and is he implicated in the arms deal (he approved it ultimately)?
