Following "a theft" at Browns jewellers, female employees were reportedly told to wear sports bras instead.

The jewellers apparently took these drastic steps in an attempt to stop thieves at its head office in Dunkeld, northern Johannesburg, where expensive precious gems and metals are stored.

Browns has more than 30 stores around the country. It associates itself with celebrities such as singers Celine Dion, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay, actress Charlize Theron and, recently, CSI Miami star Eva La Rue.

When about 70 employees arrived for work, they were allegedly ordered to switch off their cellphones and told to sign permission slips allowing the company to search their homes, cars and persons.

In addition, they were informed that they were not allowed any communication with the outside world [while at work].

A staff member who spoke to The Times on condition of anonymity, said there were posters "all over the office" ordering employees not to talk to each other.

The source said their photographs were taken and their identity documents photocopied.

Browns co-owner Larry Brown allegedly told staff the jewellery manufacturer was doing this to rid the company of the "scum of the industry" [theft].

The staff member said Brown told them the company suspected at least 40 employees of stealing.

The offices' phone lines and Internet connections were cut for the day. Employees needed to ask permission to use the toilet and had to explain where they had bought or received all the jewellery they were wearing.

All attempts to contact Browns management failed yesterday. When The Times arrived at the offices, we were turned away by a gun-toting security guard.

Browns general manager Belinda Phillips later said in a statement that, after "a loss", one of their employees was arrested and police were investigating the matter.

"For security reasons, visits are granted by prior appointment only. It is for this reason that you were not granted access," she said.

Human Rights Commission spokesman Vincent Moaga encouraged Browns employees who felt violated by the company's new rules to report the matter to them.

Got to stop the thieves somehow, or else close your doors and make them all unemployed.

I have employed people for the last 13years and from then stock, my personal (and any family member's effects, customer belongings have been stolen by my staff.

Right now I have a thief whose case I poorly managed and had the woman re-instated because I could not afford and in principle could not agree to a "golden hand shake".

Our own people steal even though one has provided them with so-called much needed employment.

But dear God try and discipline a thief. I am suprised I have not yet had Malema at my work place to come and defend a thief. The whole union big guns arsenal are always ready to be unleashed if you just want to rid your business of a leech.

So this move by Browns comes as no suprise to me. Typical to the script all the busy bodies will come out in defence of the poor employees. Meanwhile some are seating on very important stock.

Went to a funeral for one of my staff, that was the last time. My braai stand was there. Staff who were with me were just as embarrassed as I was.

Theft by staff makes me sick. The assumption that I am a hostile employer when I dismiss thieves makes me want to puke.

Who said those employees are black??
maybe you guys have never bought anything at Browns, or even been inside one of their stores. I edge you to go to all browns stores in your area, and see if you'd see a black employee there. 90% or more of Browns employees are all white. i don't condone stealing, and truly believe that anyone caught with their hand in the jar should be arrested and prosecuted. black or pink

Well done to Browns. It's a well known fact that, amongst pother things, employees steal from their employers at upmarket stores by 'reserving' items for themselves at 'staff' prices and then reselling to their pals. Most thefts at upmarket stores are inside jobs. The Human Rights Commission should be concerning themselves with protecting victims, not criminals. It is largely thanks to the HRC that we now have a situation where criminals receive better treatment all round than the victims of their crimes.

Well done to Browns. Drastic action for a drastic problem.

What I am disappointed about is the reaction of HRC.

I wanted to lay a charge of incitement to commit murder against the ANCYL Limpopo chairman. I mailed them, got a response to say the Limpopo office will handle it, mailed them, and I am still waiting for a response.

Apparently in the new South Africa it is OK to kill if you are ANC, but it is not OK to protect your assets as a company.
