Xenophobic tension prompts evacuation

About 1,000 foreign nationals have evacuated informal settlements at De Doorns in the Western Cape following a flare-up of xenophobia, police said.

De Doorns station commissioner Supt Desmond van der Westhuizen said however he had had no reports of physical violence against foreigners. He said tensions had been building since last week.

This morning, local residents had prevented foreigners from climbing onto the trucks of farmers coming into the town to collect seasonal workers for the day.

The locals claimed the foreigners — mostly Zimbabweans, but including some Lesotho nationals — were accepting lower wages than locals and robbing them of jobs.

The locals had also demolished a number of shacks rented by the foreigners before police intervened, at one point firing rubber bullets.

The shacks had already been vacated, Van der Westhuizen said.

He said 68 foreigners had over the weekend slept at a municipal storeroom next to the police station following a shebeen fight on Friday night in which Zimbabweans were involved, and rumours that action was to be taken against foreigners.

By this afternoon about 1000 people had gathered at the hall with their meagre possessions.

Officials and councillors from the Breede River municipality, as well as the Western Cape MECs for social development and safety, Ivan Meyer and Lennit Max, were on the scene to assess the situation.

The situation was quiet and police were monitoring the four informal settlements.

Van Der Westhuizen said he was however worried about what was going to happen under cover of night.

He said most Zimbabweans stayed in a settlement named Stofland, and others in Ekuphumleni and Hasie Square, while the Lesotho nationals stayed in a settlement named Maseru.

He said the outbreak of xenophobia was not a one-off incident, but an annual occurrence.

“It’s a thing with a history,” he said. “We must all come on board to solve this problem.”

A relative of mine who is a supervisor on a farm in that valley, tells me that the Zimbabwean staff work just so much harder.
The "allegation" of lower wages is just that, an allegation.

The farms are getting better production for the same wages.

read sechaba and co, 'our own' had to be evacuated to prevent them being harmed by 'their own', so much for africa for africans, Dukeboy must be laughing himself silly as he got yet another ammunitions to fire against the m*nts:-) you see how you guys make it easy for Dukeboy to nail you.

as blacks let's admit that this uBuntu is a BS designed to confuse white SAns and make them feel like outsiders (it sounds nice in theory just like the anc policies), in reality it's just another load of bull, white SAns have to watch us necklacing/butchering and making refugees (africans) to jump off high rise in kzn, they must be wondering whether this is SA's version of ubuntu. So my kind advice is that please don't make comments like 'africa for africans' and blacks have ubuntu and whites haven't, cause this makes you look/sound ridiculous!!! esp after we've been treated to episodes of these xenophobic attacks against "our own by their own" in SA.

While violence and xenophobia canot be condoned, we really do need to have tougher immigration policies and we need to secure our borders. Let's be frank - illegal immigration is a global problem and needs to be looked at holistically. What do people expect - we have 40% unemployment, plus millions of Zimbabweans (and Nigerians, Congolese, etc.) crossing the border into South Africa daily. They are forced to compete with poor blacks and coloureds and drive wages even lower. A friend of mine has a Malawian gardner who she pays a pittance while I pay mine more than double what she gives hers. Protect the borders and lets get tough on illegal immigration and human trafficking.

If memory serves me correctly:-

Total Budget for border security: R260 Million
Total budget for VIP security (including our non politician JulieArse MalEnema: R380 million

Quite simply, as long as the fat cat ANC politicians are protected they don't give a fig.

They should all go back to where they come from. If you are not from here you shouldn't really be here unless you have skills this country needs.

I personally can't go and pack up my bags and go and live in Egypt if I want to. What are these foreigners doing in the Cape? If you are not a REAL CAPIE you really don't belong here. Go back to your own country and sort out your own mess!

That all good, but to kill and beat them, there is NO excuses for that....and yes, they do work harder than our own people on the farms, no unions, none of that self oppressed attitude that a large group of SA workers bring.
