City Power in Johannesburg is working to restore electricity to the city's CBD, as well as suburbs north and east of the city, reports Talk Radio 702.

Emergency officials have also warned of potential flooding in low-lying regions.

Areas at risk include those around the Klipriver system in Soweto, areas between the West Rand's river system and the northern suburbs, including Dainfern, Diepsloot, Alexandra and Woodmead.

The City of Tshwane is on high alert for flash floods after the Weather Service warned of a 60 percent chance of showers over the weekend.

"As a result of the rain flash floods may occur, especially in low-lying areas," the city said in a statement.

Areas which have proved vulnerable to flooding include Centurion, Mabopane, informal settlements and low-lying bridges.

Motorists were urged to drive carefully, avoid speeding and be on the lookout for debris on the roads.

"The metro police will monitor roads and will be at intersections should there be a need."

The Disaster Management Centre would be "fully activated" if needed.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize will visit areas affected by heavy rainfall in the province today, a government official said.

"The premier, MEC for local government Nomusa Dube and other MECs will be doing the rounds visiting all affected areas," Durban local government spokesman Vernon Mchunu said.

At least seven people have died following floods in the province. The latest fatalities were three schoolchildren who drowned while crossing a river on their way home in Port Shepstone on Thursday.

About 150 mud houses and shacks were also destroyed by the heavy rains in Swapo informal settlement, Pietermaritzburg.
