The National House of Traditional Leaders says it was "overwhelmed" by a court ruling allowing the ritual bull killing by the Zulu people to go ahead.

"We had no doubt that the Zulu kingdom was performing its ritual within the ambit of the Zulu customary law," the traditional leaders said in a statement.

This followed a ruling by the Pietermaritzburg High Court allowing Zulus to go ahead with the bare-handed killing of a bull, which formed part of the Ukweshwama ceremony, also known as the first fruits festival.

Traditional leaders condemned the court action, saying it was an attempt to distort cultural practices.

"The intrusion of other institutions and other cultures into the cultural practices and beliefs of the Africans is noted with utter dismay and rejection it deserves," it said.

South Africa was a culturally diverse society and all cultures must be respected. It urged against utterances and actions "construed as attempts to denigrate cultural beliefs".

The Ukweshama ritual went ahead on Saturday.

Sure, all cultures must be respected, but where do we draw the line? This barbaric display should never have been allowed, but because its a 'cultural' event, no one is allowed to say anything?! That just does not make any sense. It is time we evolve to the next level; past the boundaries that institutions like culture and religion limit us to. Its time to become human...

Either ban meat or accept that every meat in the shop, some animal paid for it life. Hypocrate! You gona say, its about how the animal dies. There is no humane way of killing. Killing is killing. If u gona target certain people about the way they get their meat, think first about the animal slavery and inhumane treatment in the farms all over the world. Im talking about billions of animals, and here u complaining about one animal at a special ceremony

The killing of the bull wasn't really part of the Zulu celebration of the first fruits. It was part of a War Ceremony to psyche the warriors up for battle. It's actually quite obvious that it doesn't really belong in a celebration of first fruits, because violent rituals are there to build violent confidence, not happiness.

I think what angers the Zulus is that they are under the impression that people want the whole ceremony stopped which is not true. Kill the bull, but kill it quick. And don't drug it, fight a sober bull. And not 20-30 men on a bull, but rather only one - now that's a true warrior. I'm still trying to figure out what the symbolism behind trying to tie the bull's penis in a knot means.

These people who are making noise about animal rights what is their comment regarding Terblanche's comments in Pretoria on the weekend? To them animals are more important that black people. If it was Malema they will be making a lot of noise but now its their brother they are quiet.

Spade is a Spade, that really has nothing to do with this article...

And who cares what Terblanche has to say as he will never come close to even the smallest seat in government, unlike Malema.

When a judge does not rule according to the law, but according to whether he fears anarchy, then we may as well kiss our Constitutional Republic goodbye.

The very reason that we have a Constitution, as erroneous as it may be, is to protect anyone from being violated by anybody else even if the violator is in the majority. It is a sorry day when the judge considers the view of a group of people, who constitutionally violate the rights of animals from being cruelly treated, as being a consideration as to whether he protects animals (or people ) from cruelty or not.

This is like it was OK to gas Jews because the majority thought it OK as it is their cultural right to do so. This ruling is insane and is a ruling only fit to be considered acceptable in a wicked, barbarous society, who have no idea as to why the judicial system exists at all. It appears that neither does this judge ! Either that or he is a coward.

Jesus said that "..cowards, murderers, ..." will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Notice how cowards appear before murderers as in his statement as a violator of the same kind.
