Cellular network provider Vodacom has launched a mobile education programme to improve the quality of education in poorly resourced public schools.

Earlier this year, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga blamed teachers for the appalling results obtained by many Grades 3 and 6 pupils during the annual national assessment.

The new programme is aimed at training teachers on how to use the internet and download study material for their pupils.

"Through this initiative, teachers will now be able to use cloud computing to access vital content, teaching aids and resources to help deliver quality education," said Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys.

Motshekga's department is hopeful the new programme will improve the quality of teaching in all subjects, with the main focus being on maths and science.
