Mathew Naidoo was possessed by an evil force that left his body a day after his arrest in connection with the murders of Riekie and Johan Lotter, the Durban High Court has heard.

Pastor Leon van Assenderp, who was asked by police to counsel Naidoo and siblings Nicolette and Hardus Lotter, said all three displayed signs of "manifestations".

This happens when an evil force is ordered to leave a possessed person's body.

However, Van Assenderp also told the court that all murderers were possessed by demons.

"In life, all evil comes from evil. People who commit these crimes have lost their way and their light," he said.

He said Naidoo fell forward as if "something" had thrown him to the floor and "began twisting, twirling and [making] other unusual body movements" when he prayed for him.

He testified that Naidoo began crying "so much" that he was unable to talk to him.

Van Assenderp said that after the demons had left the siblings, reality had then "kicked in and they showed remorse".
