SA National Defence Force member Peter Mthombeni, and Philip Nkuzana were arrested on January 25 and charged with impersonating a police officer and possession of ammunition.

Members of the league claim Mthombeni and Nkuzana were plotting to kill Lebogo when they were arrested near the offices of the provincial department of road and transport.

The two have been in police custody since their arrest.

Magistrate Janine Ungerer granted the men free bail, saying the State had failed to prove why they should be kept in custody.

"I don’t believe there is evidence why you should not be released on bail," said Ungerer.

Investigating officer Captain Risimati Baloyi had argued the men would evade trial and threaten witnesses if released on bail.

Mthombeni and Nkuzana would appear in court again on March 23. The court warned them that if they approached any witnesses they would forfeit their bail.
