Harmony Gold said a protest action ended on Friday at one of its South African mines with the return to the surface of 1,700 workers who had stayed underground to protest the sacking of colleagues.

"The mine will be closed for the festive season and labour related discussions will resume in January 2013," the company said in a statement. It did not say if the almost 600 fired workers had been rehired.
