258 arrested for crime in Johannesburg as SA celebrates Freedom Day

More than 250 people were arrested for various crimes in Johannesburg this weekend, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Police conducted raids, road blocks, and stop and search operations from Friday night until Monday, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The operations were conducted in Soweto, Lenasia and Eldorado Park.

Makhubela said three people were arrested for murder, two for rape, 40 for drinking and driving, two for possession of stolen of motor vehicles and 10 for drug-related charges.

Others were arrested for shoplifting, assault and possession of stolen property.

Police closed seven illegal shebeens.

The 258 people were expected to appear in various courts in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
