Students' brains in chains

Does dealing with student affairs of a specific university campus need the baggage of political affiliation? Are students not supposed to be free-spirited, open-minded knowledge seekers attempting to broaden their world outlook?Can they succeed in that pursuit while being boxed into party political stereotypes?I found the excitement over a Democratic Alliance SRC election win recently at Fort Hare quite strange.
