In spite of the Farlam report's apportionment of blame for the Marikana massacre on the police, the unions and strikers, the mere sight of the miners with spears, guns and clubs must have been an intimidating sight to anyone confronting that scenario. Strikers and unions have a history of violence and wanton destruction.
