A lovers' quarrel ended in tragedy on Sunday afternoon after a man shot his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself.

It was alleged that the man, 38, had been renting a room at the former Dusale Hotel in Edendale when an argument broke out between him and his visiting girlfriend.

Plessislaer SAPS spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela said it was alleged that the man saw his girlfriend, Fundisile Ngcobo, texting someone on her cellphone and grabbed the phone from her.

“It is believed that he saw that his girlfriend had been talking to her ex-boyfriend and an argument broke out,” said Ntombela.

He said a frightened Ngcobo called her sister and brother-in-law to come and fetch her. However, they were seconds too late.

Ntombela said as the two family members arrived, they heard gunshots and when they went up to the man’s room, they found Ngcobo dead and her boyfriend lying motionless.

ER24 paramedic Carla Potgieter said Ngcobo had sustained a single gunshot wound to her chest and was thought to have died instantly. The man had shot himself in the head.

“When we walked into the room, the man was still alive and gasping for air,” she said.

She said he was sitting in an upright position and advanced life support paramedics worked quickly to stabilise him.

The man was then transported to Edendale hospital where he was in a critical condition.
