When the first chords of La Marseillaise resonate around Wembley at 9.41pm on Tuesday, and the camera pans down the line of serious young men in blue jerseys, drawn from across the spectrum of French society, it will be hard to think of another occasion when the visiting team's anthem has meant so much to both sides.
